in winter..

.. it's like drinking black coffee trying to stay warm and keeping the cold out. the rain falls, the wind blows. some of you even get to see snow.

in autumn..

.. it's a backyard in the suburbs, and hundreds leaves covering the green grass.

in summer..

.. it's a night-time thing. out on the balcony (porch) with some beers and your friends.

in spring..

.. it's the hope for a brighter day.

Sam Shinazzi
Then I Held My Breath

There is a singer/songwriter from Australia named Ben Lee. A casual guy who prefers to sit on the beach, surf, and sing cheerful songs about surfing and sitting on the beach singing. Sam Shinazzi is also a singer/songwriter from Australia, but not as cliched. Two albums by the Sydneysider has already been published and now there is "Then I Held My Breath". He sounds more American, than Australian; mid-tempo Americana rock. He has played with songwriting disciples such as Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Buffalo Tom, Josh Rouse, Richmond Fontaine and many other greats.

The mood of most of the songs of the new album is more melancholy and thoughtful, but this does not mean that it does not have good-humored moments. "Girls", for example, is a nice ode to the women in Sam Shinazzi's small world ("When everything gets cloudy/When everything turns gray/These are the girls that make my world turn"), is arguably one of the most successful pieces of the plate. Especially in this song is the influence of Evan Dando (which the Australian on his website lists, next to Elliott Smith, as one of his favorite artists) on the songwriting of Sam Shinazzi abundantly. "Then I Held My Breath" is a good album without a single weak song. Even on its own, the inconceivably beautiful "Please Do not Let Me Forget" warrants even closer inspection of Sam Shinazzi.
