in winter..

.. it's like drinking black coffee trying to stay warm and keeping the cold out. the rain falls, the wind blows. some of you even get to see snow.

in autumn..

.. it's a backyard in the suburbs, and hundreds leaves covering the green grass.

in summer..

.. it's a night-time thing. out on the balcony (porch) with some beers and your friends.

in spring..

.. it's the hope for a brighter day.

Sam Shinazzi
Then I Held My Breath

Americana-uk

This is the third album from Australian Sam Shinazzi. Sam has been the opening act for a few notables such as Josh Rouse and the Pernice Brothers, the influence of both those performers can be heard on this record, Rouse’s ‘Dressed Up Like Nebraska’ in particular could easily be squirreled away in the same box.

So what we have then, is guitar-based rootsy pop not a million miles from REM... ‘Lil’ Wandering Soul’ is very much in ‘Reckoning’ territory, if anything, the songs could do with more guitar oomph as Sam seems to have a good feel for both the power and the pop, but for some reason holds back a little...

The closing track ‘Something Great Must Come From This’ is bright, initially you find yourself thinking Teenage Fanclub, but it’s an original, and very hummable too. Not a bad collection...
