in winter..

.. it's like drinking black coffee trying to stay warm and keeping the cold out. the rain falls, the wind blows. some of you even get to see snow.

in autumn..

.. it's a backyard in the suburbs, and hundreds leaves covering the green grass.

in summer..

.. it's a night-time thing. out on the balcony (porch) with some beers and your friends.

in spring..

.. it's the hope for a brighter day.

The C-Minus Project
Long Drive Home

Revolver 2001

I don't know how the hell Sam Shinazzi, the man behind the C-Minus Project, manages to pull off these songs so cleanly. His feel and lyrics arfe some of the most... not depressing, but simply sad examples of music I can ever recall hearing. None of this angsty mainstream kind of fake emotion, just pure and honest desperation and melancholy that is given voice through a night in the bedroom with a guitar and a four track. The amazement lies in the feeling it evokes in the listener. Sure, you're listening to the fragile and open voice of despondency, yet by the time the disc has finished, much like Sam's performances, you're feeling this little spark of hope, and a general uplift of spirit. I find that incredible.

Long Drive Home is a step up in production quality to Sam's previous four track excursions, and happily loses none of its charm in the process. The opening ong, Birthday, is so utterly intense (maybe because we've all been there) that lyrics like "I know it'll be a long time 'til I see her again/She's getting a new life, hanging out with new friends/Of course I'm happy for her, but I'm sad for me" just make you want to grab your nearest pal and hug them for dear life. The final track, Hey Broken Girl, tells the sweet and simple tale of a boy listening to his favourite singer on the radio ("I thought of you today/Twenty-seven times I'd say/I thought about you on the train/I held you in a picture frame). The songs aren't all sad numbers, as the gorgeous 'Girl from Toledo' tune demonstrates, its gentle adoring tone is a delight to hear. Long Drive Home is a beautiful snippet of music that exhibits what so much music at the moment lacks - an uninhibited honesty and openness that stirs up every emotion imaginable and leaves you feeling purged and fresh and free.
